Fearless is a heart-wrenching conclusion to the Powerless series.

Favourite Quote:

I picture this version of us, far in a future that will never come to pass. A happy ending in which I lie on Paedyn’s lap, listening to her read until the day I fade into a distant memory.

Review:

I’ve got that bittersweet feeling a bookworm gets when they finish a series. I thoroughly enjoyed how this series ended, but I am sad that this is the last adventure I get to go on with Paedyn and Kai. This book is going to grab your heart and rip it out of your chest. The angst and pining that went on in this book is going to put you through the ringer, but you are going to enjoy every moment of it, I promise. First, for those who haven’t read the previous books, stop reading this review; there are some major spoilers from the previous books.

Once again, the previous book ended on a quite emotional and unexpected cliffhanger. Kitt, the newly crowned king of Ilya, has declared that Paedyn will marry him and become the queen of Ilya in hopes that this marriage will unite the Elites and Ordinaries in the kingdom. This was such an unexpected twist, to the point where it kind of felt like it came out of nowhere. However, as the story progresses and we spend time in Kitt’s POV, we begin to understand his true motivation for wanting to make Paedyn his wife. This declaration from Kitt, of course, means that Paedyn and Kai can no longer be together romantically, which sucks because they had literally just declared their feelings for each other in the previous chapter. This plot twist is such a big hurdle to overcome, and then you begin to wonder how the author is going to get her two MCs out of this problem in a way that makes sense and doesn’t feel like a cop-out. I am happy to report that the final climatic scene was incredibly well done and ended in a way that I wasn’t expecting.

This book is masterfully balanced in terms of fast-paced action moments and those quieter, slower moments. The author did a great job at keeping her readers’ attention by throwing in dramatic reveals, twists, and dangerous situations. It really was a real page-turner of a book. I could not put it down. But what I love was that we also got those moments where we could catch our breath and fall in love with Kai and Paedyn. I was impressed with how fresh and entertaining this final book was. This final book never felt like it was dragging on. I also enjoyed getting to explore a few new places in this world Lauren has created.

Kai’s dialogue in this book is swoony and also heartbreaking. Every time Kai was alone with Paedyn, he would say something to her that was so utterly romantic I found myself falling more and more in love with him. Poor Kai truly does suffer in this book. I’m usually not a fan of the angsty, pinning hero, but in this case, I found myself loving his character. His story and POV were just so tragic at times that I just felt my heart breaking for him.

Fearless is masterfully written and a perfect conclusion to a series that captured my attention and heart.
