Review:
Ok, I am not a fan of self-help books. They just aren’t for me. It’s not because my life is perfect, because it’s not, trust me, insert dumpster fire emoji here. I just find the advice in these books not practical, preachy, or, quite frankly, not helpful. So how did someone like me end up reading a self-help book? Blame Facebook. One day, while doomscrolling, a clip from Mel Robert’s podcast popped up in my feed, and for whatever reason, it dealt with an issue I was struggling with in my life… is my phone secretly listening to me… maybe… that’s an issue for another book to deal with. Now, watching this clip didn’t miraculously change my life, but the way she talked about this issue was relatable, and her advice was practical. Because Facebook is the way it is, more of Mel’s videos started popping up on my feed after that. It was while watching another one of her videos that I learned she had a new book out, and I thought, what the heck, and bought it.
Now, I am not going to sit here and tell you that this book changed my life and all my problems are dust in the wind. Because that is not the case. But I will tell you that I did enjoy reading this book. Overall, this is a well-written book. The way its structure makes it easy to read. Mel does a good job at balancing personal stories with research and advice. She doesn’t info dump on her readers. It is written for an everyday reader, making it an easy read. One thing I do have to say is that it can be a bit repetitive, which I am sure it is designed to be that way. The more you repeat something, the more it sticks in your head, kind of theory. One of the things I liked about this book was how it was organized. Mel shows her readers how her Let Them Theory applies to various life situations, relationships, and problems. Each section addresses a larger issue, such as work, family, or friends, and those sections are then divided into chapters that address more focused topics. I liked this because it allowed me to pick and choose what topics I wanted to read up on. For me, my work life is great, so I skipped the work section and read the sections that I felt pertained to my life. The advice given in this book is simple, practical, and makes sense. Now, I don’t think it will fix every single problem that people face in their lives; there are just some things that are too difficult to be solved by a simple theory. But the things discussed in this book have allowed me to look at issues in my life in a different light and understand why and how I have been dealing with them the way I have.
The Let Them Theory is an easy and practical self-help book that I enjoyed reading.
